Soft Fruit Growers
During the past ten years, the soft fruit industry has been completely transformed from growing in soil & peat to growing almost entirely in coir based media. The principal reason is the all-important perfect physical structure which is maintained over a far longer period than the more physically delicate peat moss that breaks down into very small particles in a matter of months after watering and fertigation regimes are introduced. This physical structure ensures the optimum air porosity and water retention required for the best root development. Unlike peat, coir can be used to achieve excellent results for two or more growing seasons. Unlike rock-wool, it is not harmful to the environment and, being organically based, it presents no disposal difficulties at the end of its useful life. In fact, at that stage, it can be used as a soil ameliorant on the farm.
