Strawberry Growers changing from Peat to Coir
With Strawberry Growers investing substantial sums in table tops to reduce picking costs and picker numbers, the demand for growbags is rapidly climbing. And judging by peat’s declining use, for environmental reasons, coir seems certain to be the main alternative.
KP Grower’s crop production adviser, Paul Keutenius agreed that coir growbags would become the norm at some time in the future. “Most growers are fairly new to coir and it will take two or three years for them to learn how to use it to best effect”, he reckoned. “You have to take each substrate on its merits and manage it correctly. That’s the key to all substrate growing”.
