DEFRA Peat Project
The UK government's new DEFRA Peat Project concerns peat extraction and the protection of upland peats. Its stated vision is that Englandís soils will be protected and managed to optimise the varied functions (or ecosystem services) that they perform for society in keeping with the principles of sustainable development and in the context of a changing climate. Its listed objectives include reduction of the rate of soil organic matter decline and protection of habitats based on organic soils, such as peat bogs, to maintain our carbon stores (to mitigate climate change) and soil quality.
